EFT Basic Procedure
First one must decide what issue they want to work on. This sounds simple but it is very important to understand that EFT works best when the target is VERY specific.
For example, if someone wanted to work on weight loss and they just said ‘I want to lose weight’ while tapping that would not have much impact. We must discover the specific incidents, emotions and memories that have contributed to our weight issues.
Rate It
After deciding what you are going to work on you must give it a rating. We use a 0 – 10 scale to rate the intensity of the emotion, memory or core belief that we wish to change.
Let’s use a more general, common emotion for these examples. Let’s use sadness. However, as stated, EFT works best when it has a specific target. So, choose something specific that makes you sad about being overweight.
In order to rate it you would say something like ‘It makes me very sad when my weight interferes with my ability to play with my kids.’ Then try to really feel how sad that makes you. Give it a rating 0 -10. Write that number down then move on to the setup.
The Setup
The setup is a statement that is repeated 3 times while tapping the karate chop point. This corrects any psychological reversal that may be present.
It goes like this ‘Even though I have this _____________ I deeply and completely love and accept myself.’
You simply fill in the blank with whatever you want to work on.
For the example above you would say something like this ‘Even though I have this sadness because my weight keeps me from playing with my children, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.’
This statement is flexible as long it contains the self acceptance and/or self love statements. It could go like this.
‘Even though my extra fat keeps me from playing tag in the yard with my kids I deeply and completely accept and forgive myself.’
The Karate Chop Point
The Tapping
The points that are tapped move down the body in the following order. Don’t worry if you skip one, EFT is a very forgiving process.
- Top of Head
- Center of Forehead
- Eyebrow
- Side of Eye
- Under Eye
- Under Nose
- Chin
- Collarbone
- Under Arm
As you tap the points you need to actually be feeling the emotion that you wish to get rid of. So, while tapping the points you repeat a reminder phrase. Usually, this is whatever words you used to fill in the blank in the setup statement. In this case we would use ‘This sadness’ or ‘This sadness because I’m too fat to play with my kids’.
After tapping through the points a few times stop and re-evaluate the rating. If the thought no longer makes you sad then you are done with that particular feeling.
If you have some emotional intensity then you need to do more rounds. Subsequent rounds need to be adjusted slightly. The subconscious mind is very literal. Therefore, you must address the REMAINING issue. So your setup statement would be ‘Even though I still have some of this sadness because my weight keeps me from playing with my children, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.’ And your reminder phrase would be ‘This remaining sadness’
Some issues are stubborn and may require a few rounds and may even require use of the 9 gamut point which may be learned if necessary.
What if the issue comes back?
Some issues may seem to ‘reappear’. What is really happening is that a different aspect of the same issue has surfaced. Each negative emotion, trauma or memory that is associated with the issue may have many aspects.
For example, if someone wants to get rid of their fear of snakes they might tap on it and think that it is gone. When they think of a snake they are no longer frightened. But then the next time they see a small garden snake in their yard they are again frightened.
What may have happened is that they did not tap for seeing a snake move. When they were tapping they visualized a still snake so when they saw the snake in the yard move they were again frightened.
All that needs to be done is tap on the different aspects about snakes that bother that person. Such as the slithering movement, or perhaps the way they move their tongue. Once all aspects have been addressed then the fear of snakes will be completely gone.
The same is true for the many aspects of most issues. Please don’t start to feel as though this will be difficult. It won’t be even if you have hundreds of aspects. There is a wonderful part of EFT called the generalization effect. What this means is that once you start working on a particular issue after you clear away the emotional intensity of some of the aspects then, at some point, they ALL loose their emotional intensity! Isn’t that great? You really don’t have to tap on every single memory of kids in the playground calling you fat or whatever. Usually just a few will do the trick!
